I am watching the lunar eclipse closely. Music playing in the background to fit the mood of the occasion for me. Deep, rhythmic, and expressive. I am ready, open to the change this event will bring. Honoring the umbra.

Today is the 35th anniversary of Roe V. Wade, the law the secures a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy. I am prochoice, and support any woman's access to a safe abortion. It is not genocide, it is not murder, it is not irresponsible.
More broadly, I support the conditions of reproductive justice, of which the right to abortion is a part, but not the sum total. Reproductive justice recognizes

Today is the MLK holiday. I feel like I should be doing something especially honorable; instead, I am sitting at home, nursing a good cup of coffee in my pajamas at noon. It is bright, sunny, and cold outside: perfect conditions for a solitary and contemplative walk around a pond or a beautiful body of water. Reflection and reflexive, that's what we need. Yesterday, I watched as the water

I'm up a little late, watching a Nightline segment on violence in urban areas, how it's worse than it's been in a very long time. The segment is of the ER in Philadelphia at UPenn, where there were 300 + murders in 2007 from the gun violence. The reporter is inteviewing two ER doctors, one of them talking about repeat trauma victims who end up in the ER multiple times over a stretch: the first

I just came across this blog while browsing. I really like it. The blogger writes about things that I can really related to right now, like persistent insomnia, loneliness, and the mysterious nature of relationships with other people, but mostly with the self. Speak it, write it, a friend of mine demanded that I do for a project we are collaborating on about childhood sexual abuse. We've both

I was in the airport yesterday, returning home from a visit with the family for the holiday, when I noticed a lengthy news report about her. Shocked to understand it was because she'd been assassinated. I have long admired this woman, who exemplified what it means to stand firmly on the land that gave you birth, carve your name into the earth, and then give your life for the liberation of it's

While participating in an email discussion on hair care products and cancer links, I just learned that upwards of 65 to 80 percent of us African-American women routinely relax our hair, spending nearly 200 million dollars a year on chemicals and related products. This is astounding to me given the damage done to our skin and our health that we've understood for a very long time now, and been

Efforts to lift every voice in discussions and strategies to address climate change is long overdue, and it's about time we call out the structural oppression in its impact on communities of color. Here's an effort and there are others which need to be cited: Joint Center Forms Partnership to Bring More African American Voices Into Climate Change Debate

i'm reading a book on the involuntary release of kundalini, the energy lifeforce that is within in all of us, but starts at the base of the spine. Apparently, I've been experiencing this release all year because 2007 has been a challenging one for me, and a lot of other people i know and don't know all that well.

I can't forget the images from Spike Lee's documentary, in the media, from listening to people's stories. I was in New Orleans earlier in 2005 for a conference on radical women of color organizing. We met in historical Treme --one of the oldest African-American communities in the country, held workshops at the school across the street from the community center, and then marched in streets in
