Happy Winter Solstice

It was fun blogging here.

Early on, Pizzadiavola expressed interest in intersectionality and Asian Americans. If you’re a woman of color interested in intersectionality and communities of color, I just tagged 39 posts about it on my blog under intersectionality. Most feminists know about intersectionality in feminism, i.e., racism and classism in feminism, but few know about sexism in communities of color. My blog is probably one of the only places on the ‘net right now to find commentary about this. I’m also proud of my women of color, violence against women, feminism and sexism tags so I hope people check out my blog.

Happy Winter Solstice and Holidays.

Be good!

Don’t tase me, bro!

Via Bint Alshamsa:

“Don’t tase me, bro” was named most memorable quote of the year in the Yale Book of Quotations.

Second was Lauren Upton, Miss Teen USA contestant’s quote, “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and Iraq and everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for us.”

“These new media are spreading these things,” said editor Fred R. Shapiro, 53, associate librarian and lecturer in legal research at the Yale Law School. “I’m not listing the most admirable quotes, the most eloquent quotes. It’s the most memorable quotes.”

Here’s the video:

How’s everyone doing?

snowflakes2.png

It’s a week before Christmas and well into the holiday season.

I’m a little blue and burned out. A couple days ago, my brother, sil and I painted his living room because my other brother and his family are coming. At first, I wasn’t crazy about the pea green shade but it worked out great. Yesterday, we went to Target for a candle holder and red candles for the mantle and it looks nice. In my twenties, I hated being with my family during the holidays (wait, that was last year) but now I feel lucky to be around some cool people.

How’s everyone doing?

Good news and bad news

Last week, the U.S. Sentencing Court voted unanimously, 7-0, to lighten sentences retroactively for crimes related to crack cocaine. 19,500 prisoners could be free within months. There has been a stark disparity between sentencing for crack and powder cocaine for two decades. 85% of federal inmates for crimes related to crack cocaine are black.

The Jena Six case just took an evil turn. Carmen of All About Race received an email that said D.A. Reed will make Mychal Bell the prosecution star witness. He will testify against the five others, four of whom will be tried as adults, and this could mean jail time for the other five:

Think what you will of LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters, he has done a masterful job of pitting Jena 6 defendants against one another and the result will probably mean jail time for each Black teenager.

Of the six Black teens accused of beating Justin Barker, a White schoolmate last year in Jena, La., only Mychal Bell is known to have had a criminal record, which included two battery incidents and two charges of criminal damage to property. By first focusing on Bell, the D.A. has been able to portray Jena 6 as hardened criminals and, equally important, force Bell into a compromising position. Recently, Bell struck a deal with the D.A. that includes testifying against his five co-defendants, if needed. Op-Ed: A Split Among The Jena 6, George Curry - BlackPressUSA -Reclaim our Civil Rights

The fact Reed hasn’t been Nifonged yet is astounding.

Democrats should grow up

Bill Clinton’s recent remarks weren’t as nasty as people made them out to be. It seems he was promoting his wife’s strong points more than dissing anyone:

Later he said that his friends in the Republican party had indicated that they felt his wife would be the strongest candidate, partly because she had already been “vetted” — another subtle slap at Obama.

She’s vetted.

Also: He said the most important thing to judge was who would be “the best agent for change” not merely a “symbol for change….symbol is not as important as substance.”

She’s been an agent of change especially on the identity politics front.

He also hit back at the charge that experienced politicians had helped get us into the Iraq war, saying that this was “like saying that because 100 percent of the malpractice cases are committed by doctors, the next time I need surgery I’ll get a chef or a plumber to do it.”

Who voted against the War? Russ Feingold.

When Rose said that all this seemed to add up to Clinton hinting that people would be “rolling the dice” if they picked Obama, the former president replied: “It’s less predictable, isn’t it?”

Obama should fire his advisers. He’s better off advising himself and even better if his wife advised him. Speaking of which, this election would be much more interesting if it was between Hillary, Michelle and Elizabeth. They’d get right down to business and come to a consensus within an hour on what’s best for the country.

Obama’s remark was nastier:

Sen. Barack Obama was asked how he would shift U.S. foreign policy in a different direction, given that several of his advisers once worked for President Bill Clinton. “I want to hear that,” Sen. Hillary Clinton chimed in, provoking laughter. Obama waited a moment, and then quipped: “Well, Hillary, I’m looking forward to you advising me as well.”

Edwards is the most progressive but Clinton and Obama are the frontrunners. Democrats should stop attacking each other and talk progressive ideals like Kucinich and Gravel. What do you think?

Intro to guest blogger

Hi, I’m donna darko and will be guest-blogging this week. I’m 39, second generation Chinese American and live in the Midwest. Currently, I’m a grad student in sociology. When I finish my thesis, I plan to get back on the ground to get Democrats in the area elected in ‘08 through DFA. It will be good to mix it up again because I’m burned out.

My personal endgame is Asian and Asian American feminism because that’s what I know and what influenced me most in life. 60% of the world’s women are Asian so I know there must be others in the world with similar experiences.

The last time I was on the ground I worked for ACORN out of a broom closet in the basement of the AFL-CIO building and was instrumental to raising the minimum wage in Florida. I know this because the director of the entire campaign thanked me personally. Secretly, I think it’s because I was one of the only people who didn’t smoke weed on the job. It became the second red state to have a minimum wage above the national rate and this paved the way for 2007 national minimum wage raise.

I’m sure my friend/then-boss is somewhere winning another campaign. She was kind of unusual because at 32 she already dedicated her life to political activism with its lack of health insurance, living wages and regular lifestyle.

My real name is Alicia. Pleased to meetcha.
