It's not really a flattering photo, but I was the highest fundraiser for the 3rd year in a row. Woohoo! Thanks to all of my wonderful, generous friends who helped me EXCEED my goal. You're the best!

I'm so lucky to know and have such wonderful people in my life. I'm also fortunate enough to have everything I need and more. Really,
my only birthday wish is that you'll help me reach my fundraising goal for the
San Francisco Walk Against Rape. I'm still $1400 short so every little bit helps.
http://www.firstgiving.com/bffteamThanks so much for your support, friendship and your generosity!

Look, I appreciate when ridiculously rich people give away large sums of money. After all, a million dollars is a a million dollars and can help a lot of people. But it's always seemed to me that the super rich could do MORE or else they wouldn't be SUPER RICH in the first place. I've never understood why multi billionaires couldn't donate most of their fortune and just live as multi millionaires so that MORE people can live a decent life with healthcare and food and shelter and education.
I know that's absolutely NOT the "American Way", but I really wish it was.
This morning, while watching "Sunday Morning", they did a piece on
Chuck Feeney and my heart was warmed. If more wealthy people were like him, the world wouldn't be so full of assholes wasting their money cars and clothes and
pets from pet mills.
Thanks for being a generous, caring, decent human being, Mr. Feeney!

Hi friends,
I’m participating in the
San Francisco Walk Against Rape again this year and I’m hoping to raise the most money again. Last year I raised $1400 on my own, so this year I’ve put together a team and we hope to raise $2500 or more. The walk isn’t until April, but I’m starting the fundraising now to make sure we reach or (hopefully) exceed our goal.
Support me by donating here:
BFFteamAlthough rape is a very serious and painful issue to think about, the walk is a really exciting, empowering, fun, feminist, community building event and everyone is welcome. If you’d like to join my team or just walk along with us, you’re more than welcome. Or you can just open your wallet and support us from afar.
Every little bit helps and will bring us that much closer to our goal and all proceeds will go to benefit San Francisco Women Against Rape (
SFWAR), SF’s only community based rape crisis center.
Thanks in advance for your support!
xoxo, jared

Anyway, I didn't have a lot of class privilege growing up, but I did have A LOT of white-privilege. Now I have a lot of both. And it's good to be reminded every now and then lest I get too big for my britches. Some of my successes have had absolutely nothing to do with my skill or merit. Just as some people's lack of success has nothing to do with a deficiency of skill or merit.
There's still a lot of work to be done.

I don't know, but
Arianna Huffington was just in our office and she gave a talk about new media and the power of blogging that was really interesting and informative. I've been so apathetic lately because I feel like it's all so futile and that no one with any power can or will do anything about it, but she gave me new hope and maybe the kick in the ass I've been needing.
We'll see...

It's no wonder those a-holes in Washington don't give two shits about poor people or the healthcare crisis. They're so far removed from the average person WHO PAYS THEIR EFFING SALARY!
Congress Members Get $4,000 Pay RaiseFortunately for members of Congress, their pay isn't tied to their approval ratings. Lawmakers in 2008 will receive salaries of $169,300, a boost of $4,100 over the pay they have lived with since January 2006.
That 2.5 percent increase is mirrored by similar raises for associate justices of the Supreme Court, who will see their pay go from $203,000 to $208,100, and Chief Justice John Roberts, whose pay will rise to $217,400 from $212,100.
The salary figures were published in Tuesday's edition of the Federal Register.
I call BULLSHIT!
(p.s. i don't condone violence. that kitty's shooting blanks. like tom cruise. har har.)

I just heard about this organization on the news this morning and it sounds awesome. Instead of giving family and friends another sweater or CD or video game the don't need, you can donate to this organization and give the gift of sight, education, clean water, etc. to someone in need on your friend or family member's behalf. They'll receive a card announcing your gift and someone in need's life will change for the better.
Seva Foundation - Compassion in action.
Gifts of Service - Gifts that do a world of good.
Then there's also one of my personal favorites,
Alley Cat Allies.
Give something that gives back instead of something that just takes up space. The world will be a better place for it.
Wishing you and yours Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year!

but I never claimed to be a lady!
I'm super duper proud of myself for getting the highest grade in the class on my Women's History essay. The subject was comparing and contrasting the ways in which the Depression and WWII affected women's lives and reinforced or defied gender roles at the time.
The average score was an 88% and I got a 98%. Yay me! I love school!
Last night in class we were discussing the radical feminist protest of the 1968 Miss America Pageant and got off on a tangent. We spent at least half an hour discussing bras: necessary, helpful support or oppressive torture device? The younger students leaned toward the former, older students the latter. Probably because we older students have been wearing uncomfortable bras for so much longer and would rather give our boobs the freedom to flop and let gravity take its course already!
I also enrolled for Spring semester. I'll be taking Spanish 2 with the same instructor I had for Spanish 1. I guess I'll be spending the winter break studying up on everything I've forgotten since last semester. Oy.
