Battle-Cry

At last: some war-mongering that I can get on board with. A battle-cry that libertarians, anarchists, feminists, and all who value decent and rational conversation can join in, full-throatedly.

Carthago Delenda Est, in English, means, Carthage must be destroyed.

Have a nice day. Peace be with you. Good luck. Best wishes. Good bye. God bless. Good night. Thank you very much. All might be ways to end a talk. But in the days of the Roman Republic, Cato the Elder is said to have uttered that phrase of curse to Carthage, or one similar to it, at the close of every one of his speeches on the floor of the Senate, regardless of the subject matter.

That phrase became the rallying cry of the Punic Wars (like, Remember the Alamo), and Carthage was, utterly destroyed. As Wikipedia reports, Carthage was, ploughed (sic) over and surviving inhabitants sold into slavery.

Well, I’m going to strive to follow in Cato’s footsteps.

I’m going to try, as often as I remember, until it’s a habit, to close all my blog posts with the phrase, Hardball delenda est.

But my ambitions are more modest than genocide. I merely want to see MSNBC’s Hardball booted off the air, with no hope of anything like it in replacement, and Chris Matthews himself standing behind a counter somewhere, wearing a paper hat, and asking those who still line up to see him, Would you like fries with that?

Hardball delenda est.

Tweety About to Meet the Puddy Tats

If you're in DC tomorrow (Thursday), please join the National Women's Political Caucus in protesting Chris Matthews' well-documented sexist commentary on NBC/MSNBC. The rally will begin at 4 p.m. outside NBC Studios (4001 Nebraska Avenue N.W. Washington, DC 20016).

As you can see, I've been busy working on my sign:

If you can't make the rally, a letter to MSNBC's management might help teach our little canary to sing a different tune.

Of course, the world looks completely different if you've belly-flopped* through the rabbit hole.

Andrew Sullivan’s ‘Clinton Problem’

I believe this is what folks in the brain-trade refer to as "gestalt."

Yes, But Will the Republicans Go There?

Digby has a great post up that laments the emerging sexist and racist narratives washing over the Obama and Clinton campaigns. If you've been over to Pandagon in the last day, then you already know I what I think could be done to squelch it.

I should chime in, also, as Amanda and I have discussed a gajillion times offline, the Democrats are in a great position this year. As voters, we've got some really good candidates to choose from. So, I've grown mostly agnostic about which Democratic candidate will ultimately ride into the White House come November.

I think it's naive to believe that voters, even Democratic voters, don't have gender and race issues on their minds and that individual experiences with and feelings about those issues may influence votes. And I think that's okay to some extent. What's been disconcerting to me in the last few days is the exceedingly racist and sexist tone of the pundit-class, as well as some of the campaign surrogates and candidates.

Actually, "disconcerting" is the wrong word. It's weak. What I mean to say is that it hurts my heart.

One the things I'm not looking forward to is how the twin evils of racism and sexism could play out in the general election. Swiftboating, Willy Horton and Donald Segretti-style rat-fucking will look like child's play compared to what might be in store this Summer and Fall. Yet, if there's an upside to the shenanigans of late, it's the backlash voters delivered in New Hampshire (and could very well deliver in South Carolina). One would hope Republican strategists are paying enough attention to learn that lesson.

And here Chris Matthews thought he was selling his book. Instead he was demonstrating his numbskull sensibility to the entire blog-reading public. Funny how funny mainstream media thinking seems to non-mainstream media folk.

You have to hand it to Chris Matthews

He never tires of finding new, disgusting ways to bash Sen. Clinton.
