Silly Site o' the Day

It's Free Cone Day again at Ben & Jerry's, in case you want to check out a listing of participating scoop shops. Cookie Jill found a site that randomly generators a B&J flavor when you type in your name. My latest B&J passion is, I think, Vermonty Python.

Bad Enough Not To Eat

There seems to be a theme developing on the food blogs today. This one's passed along by Sarah at Slashfood:

That's from the BMF Sydney corporation, advertising a new skin care product. As Sarah notes, "Let's hope that BMF Sydney does something useful with those peaches afterwards." That's as doubtful as any good coming out of this:

Via Robyn at Serious Eats, that's the Banana Wall from Stefan Sagmeister's exhibition Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far, now showing at Deitch Gallery in Soho. I love Deitch's homepage, very colorful and lots of food stuff, but I question how interactive Sagmeister's exhibit is. Do visitors get to eat any of the bananas?

Silly Site o' the Day

I'm totally wiped from this morning's interview, which was for a job not really suited for me and in an inconvenient area into which to commute, thanks to 9/11 -- but I saw it as a touristy thing, as I'd never been to the World Financial Center before, and would highly recommend it and the rest of Battery Park City as a cool place to see, particularly (I would imagine) in the summer. Anyway, left the house at 8:30, didn't get home till 3, dinner was started at 7 but not eaten until 10, so my internal clock is probably all mixed up. Maybe I'd have been better off playing a cooking game rather than actually cooking tonight. But dang, that roasted chicken and veggies was tasty! Oh, by the way, did you know this week (excluding the weekend, of course) is NYC Restaurant Week, wherein lots of upscale eateries are offering 3-course prix fixe lunches for $24.07 and dinners for $35 per person? Here's a list of participating places.

Friday Cat Blogging (™ Kevin Drum)

Made it to the fruit and veg place okay; the toe still hurts but having the sneaker on is at least bearable now. We had to mail-order more Dettol from Brooklyn, as we couldn't find it at the local pharmacy, and I truly believe soaking the foot in that antiseptic is helping the toe heal more than just about anything else. I still feel like I'm stuck in that weird limbo vortex created by the confluence of my unemployment, the writers' strike, winter and the holidays, but I'm caught up on my job search for the moment and I have some phone calls to make on Monday morning and I just need to get myself on a regular schedule again after the new year. And the sun shone today!

Hard to think, though. Too sleepy. Mayhaps I'll curl up with kitties.

Steeped in Sage and Onion to the Eyebrows

That's from here, of course. What else would I quote upon this day?

The Christmas dinner plate. Turkey covering yon sage and onion (and mushroom and sausage) stuffing, turnip, roast potatoes, ham, Brussels sprouts... it's going to amount to a fine bubble and squeak tomorrow. I'm particularly pleased that I've gotten Round One of the washing up done already.

And here's the pudding!

There never was such a pudding. And the eggnog, oh, the eggnog. I'm just glad we were able to use a tiny bit of the liquor we'd gotten from Mom's house...

It's International Cephalopod Awareness Day

Oh yes, here at the Riggs Residence we're well aware of cephalopods. Tasty, tasty cephalopods:

So there, Dr. Myers.

How Does Your Garden Grow - Update 2

The mint is still struggling a bit and the rosemary still has only one pitiful shoot, but the others are doing well, so I trimmed the chives, cilantro and dill today to put them on equal footing with the basil:

And here are my gleanings:

They tasted wonderful in this morning's omelettes!

How Does Your Garden Grow - Update 1

The basil, chives, cilantro and dill are actually starting to come up; I haven't killed them!

Not shown are the pots with the mint and rosemary seeds, where I've yet to see a single sprouting.

Potter Mania

Well, I waited for years but I finally did it.

No, nothing to do with That Book.

I finally took the first step toward having an indoor kitchen herb garden. I've had the seeds for months. I also had three plastic pots and got three clay ones from my coworker on Thursday, and yesterday Robin and I went to Home Depot to get terra cotta bases and dirt. Today we actually planted the seeds (basil, chives, cilantro, dill, mint and rosemary), set the pots on the kitchen windowsill to get the western sun and I did my first watering.

I've never, ever managed to grow any plant successfully. Wish me luck.

Kobayashi Marooned

Congratulations to Joey Chestnut (if that's not the perfect Sopranos character name, I don't know what is) for dethroning 6-time defending hot dog eating champ Takeru Kobayashi at the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Hope it brought more attention to the Coney Island area, soon to be changed forever again for the umpteenth time.
